Classic plane maker Bruce Neville is a bespoke classic plane maker come antique furniture restorer. Having completed a three-year cabinet making course in London and started working as a cabinet maker, he wanted to further his knowledge but still working with wood and on furniture. He was advised that THE course to take was at West Dean and was the full-time Antique Furniture Restoration course. So applied, took the practical test and was one of only 12 students of around 3,000 that applied to be chosen to take the course.
Having completed this, started working as an Antique Furniture Restorer for many years until one day a favourite plane needed a part and it was impossible to source. He decided that the only way to repair it was to make the part himself…. thus the plane making began.
Having owned a Norris plane for many years, a favourite to use, he decided he would try to make planes that had a similar feel. Not copies but Norris was his first inspiration, he started making planes from brass and steel in a small workshop which has increased in size over this time.
Happy to make bespoke planes to customers requirements and to work with clients to work out what would suit them best. Planes also available from stock if you are in a hurry for one.
Never happier than when in the workshop with a file in hand or with a hacksaw on brass. His background in antique furniture also ensures his wood infills are second to none.
Plane styles are evolving continually so keep an eye on the Facebook page, Instagram and website.
Please have a look through the planes on the page and see if one takes your fancy.
